Today is a big holiday in India. It is like the equivalent of Christmas to our Hindu friends in India. 10 days prior to today (August 3rd) they all went out and bought Ganesh Idols and took them to their homes. Much like we do with Christmas trees. Over the last week or so, they worshiped and decorated and celebrated.
Today is the final day of the celebration and the official holiday. It is the "immersion day", when everyone takes their Idol to the river to have a final prayer (Puja) before dropping their statue to the bottom of the river.
